The result is a very stripped down streamlined gaming experience that’s been refined over time. So, the GameFreak designers lacked the bandwidth of a high-resolution screen or more processing power to really go mad with the mechanics of the game.

Most the Pokémon’s Series has existed on comparatively technically limited hardware (the mostly various version of Nintendo’s Gameboy) to Final Fantasy’s console releases that have at times been flagship titles for the most state of the art consoles (PlayStation).
Pokémon has had an advantage during this period over final fantasy in the UX stakes that has actual been gained from a weakness and that has been through hardware limitation. Why Final Fantasy? The series shares Wizardry’s deep rooted JRPG influence, has a multi character party size, uses command menu driven battles and has multiple titles in the series that existed over a similar time frame. To understand the importance of a clear defined battle HUD we are going to do a UI comparison study here between early Pokémon and another series Final Fantasy. The battle HUD is the most viewed screen in any JRPG and its where most major gameplay events happen. Pokémon had a lot of these elements at work here but with Gamefreaks own take on them, and I think Pokémon is in its own way a “JRPG”. The traditional JRPG is a genre of game where you control a party of characters (normally 4–6) through a world made up of different areas that you explore and interact with characters to play through a storyline. And I mean more than often to the point where It felt I had played a host of games like this, and then it dawned on me is Pokémon a JRPG? I was experiencing a fair amount of Deja Vu at this point and it felt as this was something I have experienced before. I would then rest up my party, replenish my potions, chat to a few townsfolk to find out where to go next and then head back out into the wild to push on to the next town. It was getting too hard to fight them as my party of tired Pokémon were ready to feint on me (Pokémon don’t die they feint) we were just trying to reach the next town in search for respite. I think I was about 7 hours into the game and I was random battling my way through one Pokémon’s forest themed dungeons and I had some flashbacks to games I had played before.
Alola has a whole host of charming NPC characters that are beautifully brought to life with great dialogue and memorable encounters. Like any good vacation, you want to find out more about the place and the people. Pokémon’s setting is in the tropical islands of the fictional Alola Region and it feels like you’re on a little vacation as soon as you boot up the game. And the immediate pick up and play nature of 3DS gaming only enhances the casual experience. You can explore a dungeon for a couple of hours or play for a few minutes trying to catch that elusive Pokémon your hunting, regardless it can be equally satisfying. What I really loved was most however was the laid-back style of play. Pokemon games are often released in pairs in this case Sun and Moon for this breakdown I will be playing moon.Īnd I’m very glad I did as Pokémon is such a delight to play from the great pacing, deep gaming mechanics, cheery atmosphere and of course the surprisingly addictive Pokémon collecting, it’s a real joy.
